Here’s something new, a feature if you will, it’s called the Sunday read and really it’s use should be obvious. I don’t know why it has to be on a Sunday, I guess I thought everyone would be too busy for The Thursday Read. Anyway here it is:
This is from back in the heady days of 2011 but it’s still relevant, probably more so now than it was then. It’s a study done on quotes from rapists and from so called ‘lads mags’, a UK tradition that’s thankfully dying out with print. Sadly the same can’t be said of the word ‘lad’, which brings to mind preening, tanned arseholes shouting “wahey” into a camera on a beach in Benidorm.
Here’s the link, look, but before you click it consider how both use language to describe women. In a sexual connotation they both say “girl“, in uses where the subject is viewed non-sexually they’re only then described as “women“. It would be nice to think we’ve moved on as a gender since then, but all you have to do is take a look at Facebook to see that’s not true. Look how many men subscribe to groups like “Phwoar, look at her fanny” or “Drown me in your breasts!”* to see this trend in action. The medium might change, but the song remains the same.
*These are possibly groups I’ve just made up.
