Oh we’re in for a treat.
Russ Meyer gained the name ‘King of the Nudies’, and not for nothing. Though he was most famously known for what was called ‘Sexploitation’, the satire and feminist streak inherent in his films often went unnoticed by people looking for a fun time. Of course that was there in abundance too, but with a sly sense of humour and a nod towards upending conservative values, his films often transcended the genre.
When someone says utters something about a classic from the 80’s, it’s invariable that they’ll be referring to Gremlins, or Back To The Future or even The Goonies (The latter is only really applicable if you like films where the lead characters all shout their lines). For me though that list stretched way beyond that and into the films of one Larry Cohen.
Back when the classic, under-seen Punch Drunk Love was released, this bit of footage was an extra on the DVD. It’s a commercial shot for Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s character – see if you can spot the cut.
