Night #6: House On Haunted Hill (1959)

Directed By: William Castle

We have a bit of an about turn today compared to yesterday’s flick, though you could argue it shares some thematic qualities with yesterday’s offering. Mainly in that they’re just both about harmless, spooky fun.

Night #5: WNUF Halloween Special (2013)

Directed By: ???

The legend surrounding this movie was one of the more interesting things about it. There was no official release, instead bootlegs tapes were left at conventions and sometimes tossed out into the street at random, hoping to capture some of that Blair Witch Project magic. It clearly didn’t make the dent that movie did, since chances are you’ve never heard of it, but nonetheless this is a great little entry into the found-footage genre. And it’s actually found footage too!

Night #4: As Above, So Below (2014)

Directed By: Andrew Dowdle

First off, I think it’s about time to make some sort of distinction between what is and isn’t ‘found footage’. Something like The Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield is essentially found footage. The whole framing device tells us that, but for something like this, or arguably Paranormal Activity the filming is just a conceit, one as natural as choosing to shoot in black and white, or poorly mixed dialogue (I’m looking at you Christopher Nolan).

Night #1: Dead Of Night (1945)

Directed By: Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Robert Hamer and Basil Dearden.

A architect has been invited to a Stately Home for the weekend to complete some work. He arrives uncertainly and appears to know his way around even though he hasn’t been there before. There are other guests in the house and the man reveals that he’s seen them all in a recurring dream he’s been having, and it doesn’t sound like it ends well.

On Knowing When Is When

It always starts off with the best intentions. There’s an idea, be it a character or a scene or an image. Before it’s gone you grab a hold of it and hold on to see where it takes you. Sometimes you ride them out and each new idea reveals a new one behind it and before you know it you’re soaring through the clouds and you get lost in that world.

Sometimes though, like that metaphor, you hit the ground with a thud.

A Quick Note About 31 Nights Of Frights.

Well we had a good run dear reader.

Sometimes other things take over, and in this case it was life. As well as a book. I love doing 31 Nights of Frights and I love writing about movies, so the thought of leaving it for a year didn’t come easily. I thought that I could do it in between everything else I was doing and sadly it’s not been the case.

I’ll still be updating this old place (I have a Gone Girl essay coming up soon) and I’ll try and do a little something before Halloween, but in the meantime I’m going to be hard at work bringing you guys a book that I hope you enjoy.

Rest assured, this feature will be back next year, but until then lets listen to the Monster Mash and carve up some pumpkins.

We Need To Talk About Amy, Or; Here Are A Bunch Of Gone Girl Spoilers

Have you seen Gone Girl yet? If not you really should. It’s trashy, satirical, fun and seems like something Brian DePalma would’ve made after Dressed To Kill. Yes. Fun. You read that right. The movie has a dark heart at its centre, and David Fincher, along with author Gillian Flynn, have brought it beating to life.

But this specifically is to talk about Amy, and her actions in the movie. Suffice to say, I’ll be spoiling the hell out of it.
