Night #12: Sleepaway Camp III

MPW-36714

Directed By: Michael A Simpson

Good thing you’re dead ’cause in a couple of years your breasts would have been sagging something terrible!”

Well, I thought I might as well round off the set with this one. True, there is a Sleepaway Camp IV but it was never finished and only exists in some bastardised form so I don’t think that one really counts. Instead, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland sees Angela cutting, beating and blowing up a swathe through a whole other group of supposed teens again and to save costs, we’re back at the exact same camp we were in the last movie.

Here ya go, Lea. It’ll keep your tits growing. Maybe you’ll quit looking at mine.”

Sequels are funny things. What do you do with a sequel? You can try and do something different (and risk annoying fans of what you did the first time around), you could give them more of the same, which is what almost every sequel does or for your third option you could throw your hands in the air say fuck it and just make fun of the whole thing.

Night #9: Hell House LLC

“Is she going to be topless?”

Sometimes finding movies can be a gamble. Sure it’s always been that way, particularly for those of us old enough to remember renting from video shops. You made your Friday night gamble and hoped for the best. If you didn’t know much about the movie you just picked up, you had to trust the quotes on the back of the box. Browsing online is somehow worse because at least the critic quotes gave a general trend as to the quality of the movie, now you just get some generic star rating that no one really understands and scores that move in increments, as though there’s a world of difference between 5.4 and 5.8.

Please, Laura we are not bad people… we are good people.

Technology so rarely plays a part in modern horror. Typically a ghost story is a ghost story or a slasher movie is a slasher movie. If anything there’s usually a contrived reason to distance themselves from technology and when they do embrace it then it’s usually in the worst way.

Night #4: Hospital Massacre (1981)

Directed By: Boaz Davidson

“All her bones are decaying and her organs are all rancid and her blood is malignant as slime…”

Hospitals are messed up places, everyone knows this, so it’s a surprise that there are less horror movies that are set in them. I can think of countless movies set in camps or in the woods or even in a cinema (Hello Demons) but hospitals are generally underutilised.

After Hospital Massacre, or X-Ray in some places, I can’t say if that’s a good or bad thing.  Continue reading

Night #3: The Last Broadcast (1999)

Lastbroadcast

Directed By: Lance Weiler, Stefan Avalos

At 10 PM, in what will be the last broadcast, Fact or Fiction goes live.”

In 1995, two hosts of the documentary ‘Fact or Fiction?’ investigate the Jersey Devil and go missing, later found dead. Later, the tapes of their show are unearthed and edited into a movie about what happened to them out in the woods.

So, if you’re thinking this all sounds very The Blair Witch Project then you’d be right, and though superficially the movies have something in common and some more fervent fans have been insisted there’s a ripoff happening somewhere, that’s where the similarities end.  Continue reading
